August 26 – September 3:  Teacher Service and Professional Development Days 

September 7:  Labor Day Holiday

September 8:  Students’ first school day

September 17:  Back to school night for parents of new students – 6:30 pm

September 23:  Back to school night for parents of returning students – 6:30 pm

October 8:  2-hour early dismissal for students AM classes end at normal time; PM classes begin at 11:46 and end at 1:30 pm

October 9:  Interim grades given to students

October 13:  All-day elective schedule

November 3:  Professional Development for teachers – non-student day

November 5: Parent Advisory Group meeting – 7 pm

November 6:  Interim grades given to students

November 18:  All-day elective schedule  (Tuesday and Wednesday schedule switched this week)

November 18:  RVGS Foundation meeting – 5 pm 

November 19:  2-hour early dismissal for students   AM classes end at normal time; PM classes begin at 11:46 and end at 1:30 pm; Parent/Teacher Conferences 2:00-6:00

November 25:  2-hour early dismissal for students and teachers; AM classes end at normal time; PM classes begin at 11:46 and end at 1:30 pm

November 26 - 27:  Thanksgiving Holiday

December 11:  Interim grades given to students

December 17:  AM1 and PM1 Exams

December 18:  AM2 and PM2 Exams

December 21 – 22:  Tuesday elective schedule will be followed

December 23 - January 1:  Winter Break for students and teachers

January 4:  Students return to school; Intersession continues

January 7:  Application info meeting at The Governor’s School 6:30 pm

January 14:  Application info meeting at Staunton River High School 6:30 pm

January 18:  Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday (Holiday)

January 30:  Project Forum – Mandatory for all students

February 6:  Project Forum Make-up Day

February 23 – 24:  Roanoke City Science Fair

February 27:  Roanoke County Science Fair

March 4:   2-hour early dismissal for students AM classes end at normal time; PM classes begin at 11:46 and end at 1:30 pm  Canceled due to excessive snow days

March 5:  Interim grades given to students

March 11:  2-hour early dismissal for students   AM classes end at normal time; PM classes begin at 11:46 and end at 1:30 pm; Parent/Teacher Conferences 2:00-6:00

March 12 – 13:  Central Virginia Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Central Virginia Community College

March 20:  Western Virginia Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Roanoke College

April 2:  2-hour early dismissal for students only; AM classes end at normal time; PM classes begin at 11:46 and end at 1:30 pm

April 2:  Interim grades given to students

April 2 – 3:  Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair at Old Dominion University

April 5 - 9:  Spring Break

May 9 – 14:  International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, CA

May 14:  Interim grades given to students

May 17:  Algebra 2 SOL given to RVGS PreCalc students from Roanoke City

May 18:  Biology SOL given to RVGS Biology students from Roanoke City

May 19:  Chemistry SOL given to RVGS Chemistry students from Roanoke City

May 19 – 21:  Virginia Junior Academy of Sciences annual meeting at JMU

May 24:  AM Exam Review

May 25:  AM Exam Review

May 26:  AM1 Exam

May 27:  AM2 Exam

May 28:  Last AM Student Day, AM Make-up Exams as needed, Last day to turn in assignments for AM students

May 28:  2-hour early dismissal students and teachers; AM classes end at normal time; PM classes begin at 11:46 and end at 1:30 pm

May 31:  Memorial Day Holiday

June 1:  PM Exam Review

June 2:  PM Exam Review

June 3:  PM1 Exam

June 4:  PM2 Exam, Last PM Student Day

June 7:  PM Make-up Exams as needed, Last day to turn in assignments for PM students

June 11:  Teachers’ last day

End of the year dates/final exams will be finalized at a later time pending home-school calendars.

•RVGS follows the Roanoke City Public School calendar including inclement weather closings and holidays. The absence is excused of any student from a feeder school system who misses class due to a closing or a delayed opening in his/her home-school system.  Those students who miss information or activities in such a circumstance will be given high priority for make-up work.

•When the Roanoke City Schools (and therefore, RVGS) open 2 hours late, RVGS AM classes will be canceled.  If Roanoke City Schools (and therefore, RVGS) close 2 hours early due to weather, RVGS PM classes will be canceled.

* Science Fairs:  Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Regional, State, Intern’l, VJAS, VJSHS, NCSSSMST, and other events will be posted on RVGS website as we are informed of the dates.
