• A Student's Guide to the Frequently Asked Questions About the Governor's School

    WHAT'S THE GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL?

We are a regional school for motivated students in grades nine through twelve who want to learn all they can about science, mathematics, and technology. Students come from seven local school districts and attend RVGS for half of their school day. Admission is competitive. Parents do not pay a fee for their students to attend; costs are covered by the participating school districts and the Virginia Department of Education.

WHO SHOULD THINK ABOUT BECOMING A GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL STUDENT?

You should consider applying for RVGS if you are eager to learn, do well in math and science classes, push yourself to be successful, attack problems in creative ways, and enjoy lab work.

CAN I COME TO VISIT DURING SCHOOL TO SEE WHAT THE SCHOOL IS LIKE?

We encourage it! You can arrange a visit by calling our counselor. You can visit classes, meet and talk with students, and spend some private time with our counselor asking questions.

WHAT KIND OF COURSES WOULD I TAKE DURING MY FIRST YEAR AT RVGS?

Most first year students take Algebra II and Physics. All first year students take Fundamentals of Research (FOR) as an elective. FOR provides an introduction to laboratory research and each student completes a research project as part of the class.

HOW IS THE GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL DIFFERENT FROM MY HOME SCHOOL?

Our schedule is uniquely arranged to allow extended opportunities for lab work. Other differences include the pace (it's faster), group work (it's common), class size (smaller), relationships with faculty members (they really know you), peers (everybody is motivated and here to learn), the equipment (extensive use of scientific equipment and computers), and a relaxed atmosphere.

    HOW DO I APPLY?

To get an application you and a parent/guardian must attend one of the Governor's School Application Information Meetings held at RVGS and local high schools during the month of January. Applications will be available at the end of each meeting. Check our calendar or contact the school for the meeting schedule. Completed applications are submitted to your home school by the due date they establish.

DO I SEND THE APPLICATION BACK TO THE GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL?

No, you turn it in to your home school. Remember there are strict deadlines that you must follow, so be sure to check with your home school guidance counselor about the application due date.

    IS THERE MORE HOMEWORK?

Usually yes, but the homework assignments are intended to increase understanding and provide valuable practice to help you be successful.

ARE TIME MANAGEMENT AND STUDY SKILLS IMPORTANT HERE?

They sure are, and we help you practice and learn those skills. You will receive your own personalized RVGS planner for assignments, timelines, due dates, and upcoming activities. Additionally, class websites contain detailed calendars of activities and due dates.

WHAT DO STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES?

From a recent graduate: "RVGS is truly a place where you can be surrounded by peers with ambition and motivation, as well as supportive faculty members and staff.  During my four years at RVGS, I loved every single minute.  Even with the rigorous and challenging classes, the teachers’ and other students’ support are encouraging and motivating.  Everyone at RVGS wants you to succeed.  I also loved how much RVGS prepares you for not only the class you are taking, but valuable skills for after high school like having a growth mindset and teaching yourself how to study."
